I’m curious why that idea felt compelling enough to work into a song. Those lyrics are about rethinking that framework and being like, “What does anyone think family is?” versus what we’re supposed to feel family is. I think it means many other things, and I think family is not the concept that we’re beholden to. It can mean that, but I think it has this American connotation of the end-all-be-all for love and acceptance. People say, “This is my chosen family,” or with your friends, you’re like, “You’re my real family,” and I was thinking about how those sayings are a roundabout way of saying, “I feel very loved and accepted by you, and I love and accept you,” which is not what I think “family” means. On the title track, there’s a lyric where you say you don’t believe in family. But I would say this record is pretty layered and lush, and I didn’t think there were a lot of things that looked gross and sounded the way my record sounds. ![]() For the art direction, I wanted to make something really eye-catching but also very aesthetically gross and raw-in my own life, those are things I’m drawn to. I didn’t think it was too insane or anything, but then I was on Reddit and everyone was saying the record cover is horrible. I was also wondering if “invasive” is a word you’d use to describe the album and single artworks of disturbing, almost dissociated close-ups of mouths and eyes. I didn’t want to have any sort of background-music sound. You’ve described Public Storage as “invasive.” I’ve never heard that word used to describe music before.Ī lot of music I’ve heard from young people seems to be more atmospheric, versus experiential music where it feels like, “This is a story I see myself in,” whereas atmospheric music is like, “This song plays in the background of my life.” I wanted to make a really layered and textured record. I would collect all these different references all the time, and I never found one genre that I wanted to form my songwriting identity into.” “ The music you make is all derivative of the music you listen to, and I never gravitated toward any one type of music. Sonically, the eclectic, jumbled nature of it lent itself to the public storage metaphor. ![]() I would collect all these different references all the time, and I never found one genre that I wanted to form my songwriting identity into. The music you make is all derivative of the music you listen to, and I never gravitated toward any one type of music. With all the projects I’ve released in the past couple of years, I would describe them as sonically very eclectic. I understand how the album’s titular public storage metaphor-the idea of items in storage units-might describe the structure of an album, but I’m curious how the metaphor impacted the music itself. We recently spoke with Vu about the extended metaphor underlying Public Storage, the desperation and impatience behind the record’s genesis, and the moment she realized that Phillips was the perfect co-producer. They do the same for the inscrutable yet clearly personal nature of Vu’s lyrics, which find the artist questioning notions of family, what we find in other people, and, ultimately, her place in the world. Vu and Phillips explore these new sonic frontiers at slower tempos than in Vu’s past, and these pared-back paces spotlight the delicate balance that Vu and Phillips strike between restraint and combustibility. The explosive chorus of Public Storage ’s title track is a great example, and so is the balance that “Keeper” strikes between Vu’s more electronic past and rock-indebted present. While working on the album, the two dug deeper into the rock underbelly of Vu’s previous highlights and emerged with a booming, guitar-driven sound. ![]() Though the label is often associated with solo electronic acts, Public Storage is Vu’s least electronic record to date, thanks partially to co-production-a first for the previously entirely self-produced Vu-from Jackson Phillips of indie-rock institution Day Wave. In many ways, the LP is indeed a new start, if not a forceful push of the reset button.įor starters, Public Storage is Vu’s first release for esteemed label Ghostly International. So to call Public Storage her debut album might be a bit disingenuous, but it does make a modicum of sense. Her 2019 double EP Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway squeezed 10 tracks into just under half an hour, certainly an album-length duration. How Many Times is often referred to as Vu’s debut EP, yet its 38-minute runtime is as long as the average LP. ![]() In summer 2018, after collaborating with Willow and earning Tegan and Sara’s endorsement, the 20-year-old Angeleno released How Many Times Have You Driven By on Luminelle Recordings. It’s not exactly a hot take to question an artist’s first album being described as their “debut” when they’ve already built a fanbase with several EPs, and Hana Vu ’s Public Storage is an especially apt example. ![]() Text messages are great, meeting up in person is even better, but the easiest way to make a genuine connection in the least amount of time is to make a call. Our response is that checking in is reason enough, and you don't get to control how they respond. At Call Your Friends, we regularly hear from people that feel they need a reason to reach out, or fear their friends don't want to be bothered. It can be as simple as sending a message like "Hi! ![]() Correspondingly, impulsivity is associated with poor academic achievement and impaired psychometric performance on reasoning tasks ( Schweizer, 2002 Lozano et al., 2014). Although, spontaneous actions may be adaptive, for example when the matter is of little importance or when there is little time to make a decision ( Dickman, 1990), high levels of impulsivity often result in negative consequences. Examples include a preference toward obtaining immediate gratification over a delayed (yet ultimately more profitable) outcome, making “snap decisions” before evaluating available information, or having difficulty waiting one’s turn, withholding a reaction, or aborting an initiated motor response ( Daruna and Barnes, 1993 Moeller et al., 2001). Impulsivity describes a set of behaviors characterized by relative dominance of spontaneity over consideration. This novel insight enhances our understanding of impulsive behaviors. ![]() Interoceptive sensibility was only associated with negative emotions component.Ĭonclusion: Our findings support the proposal that risk-taking and impulsivity represent distinct constructs that are differentially affected by current mood states. This separation was further highlighted by their relationship with the current emotional state: positive affect was associated with increased risk-taking tendencies and risky decision-making, while negative emotions were related to heightened impulsivity measures. These were separate from measures associated with impulsivity, both trait (negative and positive urgency, premeditation, perseverance) and behavioral (delayed discounting and reflection impulsivity). Namely, sensation-seeking, reward sensitivity and probability discounting reflected risk-taking. Results: We observed a clear separation of measures used, both trait and behavioral. Data were interrogated using principal component analysis, correlations and regression analyses to test mutual relationships between personality traits, interoceptive sensibility, mood state and impulsive behaviors. Method: 574 (121 males age 18–45) individuals completed self-report personality measures of impulsivity, reward sensitivity, punishment avoidance as well as interoceptive sensibility, undertook a mood assessment and performed a set of cognitive tasks: delay discounting (temporal impulsivity), probability discounting (risk-taking), and reflection impulsivity task. Here, we examined how personality traits of behavioral tendencies, interoceptive sensibility as well as transient mood states predict behavioral performance on impulsivity and risk-taking tasks. It is, therefore, crucial to understand the factors which contribute to impulsive behaviors. Objectives: The consequences of impulsive decisions and actions represent a major source of concern to the health and well-being of individuals and society. 4Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Brighton, United Kingdom. ![]()
Unlike most sports flicks, Hoosiers doesn't hype the outcome by pretending that what's at stake is epochal-not to anyone but the people involved, anyhow-and that's what makes it affecting.Ĭritical raves and a Best Picture nomination couldn't turn Raging Bull into a commercial success in 1980, but this famously intense biopic of middleweight bor Jake La Motta remains the pivotal film of both Martin Scorsese's and Robert De Niro's careers. The movie's decency, genuine affection for makeshift triumphs, and attentiveness to unexpected, charming bits of behavior keep lifting it above the herd. The best thing about Hoosiers is the acting, especially Gene Hackman's shrewdly desentimentalized performance as the new coach of a 1950s Indiana high school basketball team and Dennis Hopper's no less shrewdly sentimentalized turn as a town drunk who's also a basketball encyclopedia. The bonus disc accompanying each title in The Complete James Dean Collection features a slew of worshipful docs and some touching extras Rebel's include not only the original blackandwhite screen tests — far more spontaneous and edgy than the final movie — but a retrospectively gruesome PSA in which Dean chats about, of all things, highway safety: "The life you might save might be mine." James Dean played just three bigscreen roles before introducing his Porsche to a Ford in 1955, and if you're curious about his acting chops, his imaginative, thwarted performance in George Stevens's otherwise sludgy Giant is the interesting one.
